ABOUT NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was established on September 24, 1969, during Gandhi's centenary year. This scheme was first launched in 37 Universities with 40,000 students at the initial level.

Today the NSS has become the largest Government organization of students in the country comprising members from the +2 levels to the college and university levels. The strength of volunteers has now increased to more than 30 lakhs, which makes the NSS one of the largest student forces in the world.

The NSS is useful not only for developing the student’s personality, but also helps promote the unity and integrity of the nation by bringing together young people from diverse geographical and socio-cultural backgrounds.

The NSS unit at the college has been actively working from the academic year 2012-2013 under the different program officers currently Dr. N Praveen Chandra is the program officer.

The main objective of the NSS is the “Development of the personality of Students through Community Service”

Aim of NSS

The NSS is a part of our academic, social, and personal life as it is the third dimension of education. It allows the students to actively contribute their services for the cause of the community and the nation, thus helping them develop their personality. Service and attain the traits of a leader of the country. As such, the NSS is the right platform, where the student-youth of the nation may get involved with real-life social activities, thereby becoming responsible citizens of India.

Motto of NSS

“Not me but you”

The Motto of NSS “Not me but you” reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. NSS helps the student’s development & appreciation of other people’s points of view and consideration towards other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is a food doctrine in this motto, which underlines the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole, hence, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

Objectives of the NSS

Main Objective:

“Development of the Personality of Students through Community Service”

Secondary objectives:

  • Understand the community in which they work.
  • Understand themselves about their community.
  • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving.
  • Develop among them a sense of social and civic responsibility.
  • Utilize their knowledge to find practical solutions to individual and community problems.
  • Develop competence required for group- living and sharing of responsibilities.
  • Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
  • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes.
  • Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Practice national integration and social harmony .
NSS Logo

The logo for the NSS is on the giant Rath Wheel of the world-famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) located in Orissa, India. The Red and blue colors in the logo motivate the NSS Volunteers to be active & energetic in nation-building social activities. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation, and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, the wheel thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.

Classification of NSS Programme
  • Regular NSS activities:
    Under this, students undertake various programs in the adopted villages, college/school campuses and urban slums.

  • Special Camping Program:
    Under this special camping program, 7 days of annual special camps will be organised at different villages in association with gram Panchayats and villagers.

NSS at PESIAMS

Based on the above objective and principles, the NSS wing of the college came into existence in the academic year 2012-2013.

Responsibility :

  • The program officer conducts the meeting to constitute the advisory committee.
  • The President, the Program officer, and the committee members select the student representatives.
  • The program officer will prepare the action plan for the year and share it to the advisory committee to decide the activities to be conducted.
  • The program officer identifies the guests and resource persons for the special invited talks, training programs, and annual special camps.
  • Maintains the NSS wing records, reports, and documents and submits the Annual activity report and Annual Special Camp report to the University NSS Coordinator.

Standard Operating Procedure(SOP) :

  • The program officer, members of the Advisory Committee, and Student representatives will plan the activities to be conducted in an academic year.
  • The program officer will take normal permission to execute the plan of activities.
  • The program officer will inform students about activities through circulars and encourage maximum participation.
  • The program officer ensures that all activities are executed as planned and included in the institution's calendar of events or as agreed upon in meetings.
  • The program officer will take feedback on each activity organized by the wing to know the quality of the activity organized and if required, to enhance the quality of the program organized under the wing.

SOP for Youth Red Cross Unit

Youth Red Cross

"Youth Red Cross" is one of the wings of the Indian Red Cross Society. The Red Cross Society is a worldwide, well-known, universally accepted, admired, and internationally identified humanitarian service organization. It is the biggest, independent non-religious, non-political, non-sectarian, and voluntary relief organization treating people equally all over the world without any discrimination as to their nationality race, and religious beliefs.

Indian Red Cross Society

Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) was established in 1920 under the Indian Red Cross Society Act and incorporated under Parliament Act XV of 1920. The act was last amended in 1992 and the rules were formed in 1994. The IRCS has 35 State / Union Territories Branches with more than 700 districts and sub-district branches. The honorable President of India is the President and the Honorable Union Health Minister is the Chairman of the Society. The Indian Red Cross's programs are grouped into four main core areas: Promoting humanitarian principles and values; Disaster response; Disaster preparedness; and Health and Care in the Community.

The Red Cross promotes Humanitarian values, which encourage respect for other human beings and a willingness to work together to find solutions to problems. From the seven fundamental principles, the movement aims to influence the behavior of all the people.

Objectives of Youth Red Cross

As a movement of the youth, CSR WING seeks to:

  • To make them understand and accept civic responsibilities, and act accordingly with humanitarian concern.
  • To enable the growth and development of a spirit of service and sense of duty with dedication and devotion in the minds of youth.
  • To foster better friendly relationships with all without any discrimination.
  • Encourage community service through training and education.
Aims of Youth Red Cross

As a movement of the youth, CSR WING seeks to:

  • Having a workshop for CSR WING volunteers to enlighten their knowledge in first-aid and rescue steps in an emergency.
  • Plan to organize blood donation camps.
  • Planned to conduct an awareness program for AIDS, Non-communicable diseases like diabetes, COPD, etc.,
Fundamental Principles of the Youth Red Cross

As a movement of the youth, CSR WING seeks to :

  • Humanity : The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavors, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation, and peace among the people.
  • Impartiality : It does not discriminate due to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class, or political opinions. It endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.
  • Neutrality :To continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious, or ideological nature.
  • Independence :The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may act as per the principles of the Movement.
  • Voluntary Service :It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by a desire for gain.
  • Unity :There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.
  • Universality :The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
Youth Red Cross at PESIAMS

Based on the above Objectives and Principles, the Youth Red Cross Wing of PESIAMS was established in the academic year 2013-14, aligning with Kuvempu University notification. By default, all students will be volunteers of this wing. Youth Red Cross helps the students to be disciplined and makes them understand their responsibility towards the country and society.

The Youth Red Cross wing of the institution organizes special invited talks, training programs, and workshops for its students and for the students of other colleges to enhance their civic sense and responsibility.

Responsibility :

  • The coordinator conducts the meeting for the composition of the Advisory Committee.

  • The Coordinator identifies the guest and resource persons for the special invited talks and training program.
  • Maintains the CSR wing unit records, reports, and documents and submits the Annual activity report to the University Nodal Officer.

Standard Operating procedure (SOP) :

  • Coordinator, Members of the Advisory Committee, and student members will plan the activities to be conducted in an academic year.
  • The coordinator will take formal permission to execute the plan of activities.
  • The coordinator will notify the activities of the students through the circular and encourage maximum participation in all the activities.
  • The coordinator ensures all the activities should be executed as decided and incorporated in the calendar of events of the institution/as decided in the meeting.
  • Coordinator will take feedback on each activity organized by the wing to know the quality of the activity organized and if required, to enhance the quality of the programs organized under the wing.

SOP for Institutional Social Responsibility Wing

ABOUT ISR

Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) in an educational setting refers to the commitment of institutions to serve their communities, promote ethical practices, and make a positive impact on society beyond their primary role of providing education. ISR involves embedding social responsibility into the institution's core values, mission, and everyday practices. It aims to prepare students not only academically but also as responsible and ethical members of society who actively contribute to their communities and the world.

Social responsibility is a concept where institutions voluntarily choose to contribute to the betterment of society and the environment. Recognizing that social responsibility is essential in everyone’s life, our institution has taken steps to instill these values in students. Consequently, we have established the Institutional Social Responsibility Wing of PESIAMS for the academic year 2023-24, with the approval of our Governing Council.

Objectives :
  • To provide a neutral and credible platform to all its volunteers engaged in ISR best practices for capturing relevant issues to foster sustainable growth.
  • Community Engagement and Outreach.
  • Promoting diversity and inclusivity within the institution by creating a welcoming environment for students.

Responsibilities :
  • The Coordinator will conduct the meeting to establish the Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) Advisory Committee.
  • The Chairperson, Coordinator, and members of the wing will select student members.
  • In collaboration with the Heads of Departments (HODs) and class teachers, the Coordinator will identify volunteers for the ISR Wing. These selections will be approved by the Chairperson during the meeting. Selected volunteers are expected to actively participate in all activities organized by the ISR Wing.
  • The Coordinator and committee members will create an action plan for the year and present it at the Advisory Committee meeting to finalize the planned activities.
  • The Coordinator will maintain records, reports, and documentation for the ISR Wing and will submit an annual activity report to the Chairperson.

  • The Coordinator, along with the Members of the Advisory Committee and student representatives, will plan the activities throughout the academic year.
  • The Coordinator will obtain formal permission from the Chairperson to execute the planned activities.
  • The Coordinator will circulate a circular notifying the volunteers of the activities and encouraging maximum participation in all events.
  • The Coordinator will ensure that all activities are executed as planned and included in the institution's calendar of events, as discussed in meetings.
  • The Coordinator will gather feedback on each activity from members and volunteers involved in organizing the events to assess the quality of the activities and identify any necessary improvements.
